Ready to Code

The Fisher-Watkins Library has received $500 from the American Library Association to help plan and implement coding activities. Our library is one of 250 school and public libraries around the country to receive this microfunding from Libraries Ready to Code sponsored by the American Library Association in collaboration Grow with Google across all 50 states.

The 250 libraries selected for CS Ed Week funding will each host activities based on Google’s free CS First curriculum, which uses video-based instruction to introduce CS to students through block-based coding. Libraries will pursue projects that reflect themes critical for advancing youth learning, especially for building computational thinking literacies. The Ready to Code team estimates that the CS Ed funding will support more than 60,000 youth all around the country taking part in coding activities.

Cushing’s Math Club, organized by Diyan Gao and Barr Wang, hosted the coding event, Animate A Name, on the evening of November 27, during which eleven students animated our “rollpens” hashtag in highly imaginative ways. During class on November 29, Mr. Treyanurak’s ESL Speaking and Listening class worked on An Unusual Discovery where two characters find an unusual object and discuss it. Ms. Gross, Library Director, is looking forward to introducing more coding activities across the curriculum.

“ALA is pleased to provide microfunding to the Fisher-Watkins Library at Cushing Academy and other Ready to Code libraries,” said ALA President Loida Garcia-Febo. “We hope this microfunding will generate enthusiasm for CS Ed year-round programming to develop critical thinking and digital skills youth can draw on over a lifetime.”
