Remembering Dr. Joyce Ferris

The family of Dr. Joyce Ferris has announced plans for a celebration of her life.  The service will be held:

Saturday, January 12, 2019 at 2:00 pm
First Unitarian Universalist Society of Exeter
12 Elm Street
Exeter, NH 03833
(Snow date: January 19, 2019 at 2:00 pm)

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Planned Parenthood of Northern New England, where Joyce served as a Board member, or to a scholarship fund at the Wolfeboro Camp School.

Beloved by her students and colleagues, Dr. Ferris taught English and was the Dean of Studies during her eight years of service at Cushing from 1979 - 1987. A caring and cherished teacher, mentor, colleague and friend, she will be remembered and greatly missed by the Cushing community and all who knew her.

Following Cushing, she served as a member of the faculty and administration at Brewster Academy, before being appointed head of the Senior School at Sewickley Academy (Pittsburgh, PA). Returning to New England after her retirement from Sewickley, she was appointed the Academic Dean at Wolfeboro Camp School in 2005, a position she held at the time of her death. With a zeal for learning as well as for teaching, Joyce was awarded a bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina, master's degrees from Cornell University and from the University of Chicago Divinity School, and a doctorate from Drew University.

She was the proud mother of David Ferris '81 and Tanya Ferris '85.

Dec. 31, 2018

We are deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of Dr. Joyce Ferris, beloved former Dean of Studies and member of the English department.

Ed Cooper, Head of School and Enrollment at Wolfeboro Camp School, where Joyce was academic dean, has informed us that Joyce was in surgery for a hip injury following a recent fall on an icy sidewalk. He wrote, "I spoke with Joyce just ahead of her surgery. She was in good spirits and looking forward to her usual endless list of future endeavors including Wolfeboro. Needless to say, an extraordinary life more than well lived and legions of students, friends, family, colleagues and schools all better off."

The thoughts and prayers of the Cushing family are with her children David P. Ferris '81 and Tanya Ferris '85, and with all her family, devoted former students and dear friends.
