Coming off the holiday break, the JV Boys’ Basketball Penguins had a short week of practice leading into the core of their season, with five games over the span of just eight days! After getting in the gym for practice Thursday and Friday, they began their five-game stretch at home against Tilton.
Cushing controlled the pace of play from the opening tip. Hot starts from Jaylen Smith (12 Points) and Brett Feinsod (25 Points) lead the way as both scorers and facilitators on the offensive end, the Penguins came out of the gates running on an 11-0 run.
While the Penguins scored early and often, the true difference-maker in this game came on the defensive end. High energy, active hands, and strong close-outs from the likes of Eli Frazier, Gerald Tam, and Ethan Money prevented the Tilton offense from finding any rhythm; not to mention countless hustle plays to win loose balls sparked by the efforts of Smith, Frazier, Karabo Muhammad, and Brendan Sampson. The defensive intensity from the Penguins remained throughout the half and allowed them to go into halftime up 37-8.
As the second half began, Cushing continued their strong play. Adding some size to the lineup, Denzel Ben Roosalem and Daniel Kodsi protected the paint and remained strong on the glass, preventing Tilton from getting offensive boards and limiting their possessions. Looking to close out the second half with the same focus that they started with, Cushing saw sets of fresh legs entering into the game regularly, and, as a result, numerous individuals contributed offensively - most notably Patrick Carroll with a late-game three-pointer that had the bench out of its seats.
With time winding down, the Penguins slowed the pace of play and secured their first victory of the new calendar year. Stay tuned as they look to continue this momentum into next week, with four games between Monday and Saturday.
Up next, Cushing takes on Hillside School at home on Monday, Jan. 7th at 4:15pm.
