VGIH vs. New Hampton School: CA 3; New Hampton 6

The Cushing Varsity Girls’ Hockey team played the second of four games scheduled on the day for the Cushing Hockey Program. It was a Saturday afternoon match-up against a strong and competitive New Hampton School squad. The four Cushing games on the day were being played as a part of the 10th Annual Pink the Rink event with all proceeds going to support Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

It was quick starting action when only 36 seconds into the game New Hampton squeezed one past Penguins goaltender Sarah Potter. The first period was defined by the hard forechecking of both teams as well as the overall intensity. With approximately nine minutes left in the first period, Cushing’s Mia Langlois put one past the New Hampton goalie on a nice feed from Shea Verrier. This knotted the score at one and, despite multiple solid scoring chances for Cushing as the period dwindled away, the Penguins were unable to gather the go-ahead goal before the end of the period.

The Penguins came out of the first intermission buzzing and forced New Hampton into the penalty box. Cushing took advantage of the power play on a Dom Biron hustle, desire, and no quit play. Biron sped down the left side of the ice beating out the New Hampton players and fired a shot on net. The New Hampton goalie made the initial save, but Biron would not be denied as she gathered up her own rebound and took the puck around the back of the net to throw it past the goalie. This goal put the Penguins up 2-1, but New Hampton was quick to respond and tallied one of their own to tie the game at 2-2. The Penguins lost some focus as the second period wore on and the Huskies of New Hampton netted three more goals to go into the second intermission up 5-2.

Cushing knew they needed a big third period to complete the comeback and they came out of the locker room ready to play. The Penguins started the period with offensive zone time and were putting pucks to the net, but unfortunately the New Hampton goalie and defensive were gobbling up these pucks before they could find the back of the net. With over half the third left, the Huskies scored another to take a commanding 6-2 lead. The Penguins would catch a break when New Hampton dished out an elbow to the head of a Cushing player and Cushing went on a four-minute powerplay. Despite catching the break of a long powerplay, the Penguins were unable to cash in and even took a penalty of their own to negate the last 45 seconds of it. The final highlight of the third period was a Margaret Sullivan goal with only 15 seconds left on the game clock to pull the final score to 6-3 in favor of New Hampton.
