JVGB vs. Phillips Exeter Academy: CA 11; Exeter 20

Philips Exeter Academy - 20
Cushing Academy - 11

The Cushing JV Girls’ Basketball team loaded the bus on Wednesday afternoon for the first away game of the season as they traveled to Phillips Exeter Academy. The day was marked by aggressive defense and huge improvements over last year’s match. Despite losing 11-20, the team almost doubled their scoring output from last year while holding Exeter to fewer than half the points allowed in the previous meeting.

The Penguins set the tempo with high energy defense and Exeter responded by pushing their fast break opportunities and dominating both the offensive and defensive boards in the first half. The offensive effort for Cushing was a bit chaotic in the first half with a shot by Manisah Islam falling in the final minute to bring the halftime score to 4-8 in favor of Exeter.

The second half brought a shift in rebounding, as Cushing committed to stronger boxing out and a more aggressive mentality. Allison Green and Alicia Martin Kato led the way with four rebounds each while Rosie Xu and Sylvia Ding both grabbed two each. Maintaining their defensive pressure while settling in a bit on offense, Cushing put together a strong second half but was unable to keep up with the athleticism and speed of their opponent. Exeter emerged with the victory, but Cushing left the court with a great deal of pride in putting together a full 32-minutes of tough basketball.

The Penguins will host Williston Northampton on Saturday, Jan 12th in Heslin Gym. Game time is set for 1:00pm.
