Lunar New Year Celebrations

新年快乐! (Happy New Year!)

For those that celebrate it, the Lunar New Year is a time of family reunion and it is the most important festival celebrated in China, Korea, Vietnam, Laos, and Singapore. There are numerous traditions associated with the New Year, such as exchanging red envelopes (hóng bāo) and enjoying delicious meals with extended family. This year, the Lunar New Year began on February 5 and will end on February 19. The festival falls on a different day each year, in accordance with the Lunar Calendar.

Jerry Zhao '20, who helped plan Cushing's Lunar New Year celebrations told us, "By organizing this event, I want to have students feel involved in the community. I want students to feel comfortable and for them to know that there can still be a family outside of the family." To help bring this concept to life, a group of Cushing parents, along with students, faculty, and staff, prepared 1,500 handmade dumplings and decorated the dining hall in honor of the Year of the Pig. These delicious dumplings were served to the Cushing community during lunch on Friday, along with a number of other authentic Asian dishes such as char siu and tteokguk. At the conclusion of Friday's all-school assembly, Dr. Bertin informed students that they would all receive a red envelope on their way to lunch.

Over 50 students will attend the International Club's annual Lunar New Year trip to Boston this weekend, which features dinner at a Chinese hot pot restaurant and karaoke.

Many thanks to Cushing parents Baojun Zhang P '20, Min Jiang P '20, Huayi Jiang P '20, and Chunyu Liu P '20 for their help in making our Lunar New Year experience a true family affair! Thanks to Dr. Xiaofen Qiao, Dr. Bruce Sinclair, Li Batista-Lin, Jeanine Eschenbach, and our many student volunteers who helped prep the dumplings!
