On Monday, October 31, Cushing Academy welcomed Ray Bourque, parent of two Cushing alumni and a member of the NHL Hall of Fame, to an all-school assembly Leadership Discussion. During this event, Mr. Bourque was presented with the Academy's 2011 Hero Award, highlighting his extensive charitable work and his service to Cushing Academy.
Dr. Tracy along with students Meghan Chenausky, Sam Langrock, and Sam Boyd posed several questions to Mr. Bourque regarding his views on leadership, experience as a leader and captain, and how those qualities can lead to success beyond the ice and athletic fields. Stressing the importance of commitment, preparation, and passion, Mr. Bourque urged students to lead by example. “You don’t have to be a veteran, a star, or have a “C” on your jersey to lead and to make a difference,” he said, “It’s how you approach and prepare for your team and your task. Be as good as you can be and by doing that, people will follow. You’ll make a difference.”
Following the assembly, Mr. Bourque met with members of Cushing's Athletic Leadership Program as well as a group of students from Oakmont Regional High School invited to campus for this special occasion.
Mr. Bourque is the father of Chris '04 and Ryan '09 and volunteered as a Cushing hockey coach for several seasons. Considered one of the greatest NHL defensemen, he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2004. In addition to his philanthropic work with Bourque Golf and Celebrities for Charity, Mr. Bourque is a spokesman for TD Bank and owns Tresca, a successful restaurant in Boston’s North End.
