The Things That Matter: For Nate Berkus, Cushing is One
Nate Berkus '90 pays tribute to Cushing and Madame Storm in his new book, The Things That Matter.
Cheryl Storm, Cushing's beloved French teacher, recently received a surprise in the mail – an advance copy of The Things That Matter, by Nate Berkus ’90. The book, which will be released on Tuesday, October 16, includes several nice Cushing shout-outs and a great tribute (below) to Madame!
“At Cushing, I fell in love with New England. My favorite times were Fall Free weekends, when I visited classmates who lived in Boston and Cambridge and New York City. And I began my fascination with France, thanks to my glamorous French teacher Cheryl Storm, who had cool earrings, wore her bangs at a very chic angle, and rocked a designer scarf over her shoulder. Here we were, sitting in a classroom at the base of a mountain in western Massachusetts, but believing that we were in the heart of Paris. Ms. Storm made us feel what it would actually be like to wander into a French bakery and order a croissant and citron presse. There is a word she taught us, debrouiller, which means “to manage” or “to get by.” She said that she didn’t want us merely to get by, she wanted to see us go to France and be able to “express our personalities.” Years later, I sent her a Louis Vuitton bag, with a note saying how much it reminded me of her, and she sent me back one of the most beautiful letters I’ve ever received.”
