Dear Cushing Community,
I am deeply saddened to share the news of the passing on Saturday morning of John G. Sommers, Sr., a beloved member of the Class of 1974 and a devoted Trustee, following a battle with cancer. John's sister, Heather Sommers Perry '71, has shared with us that he died peacefully at home, surrounded by his family. I know that the entire Cushing community joins in sending our heartfelt condolences to John's wife Elizabeth, and their children John Jr., Rachel '07, and Matthew '11, and to John's mother Betina, his sister Heather '71, and their extended family.
John's kindness, compassion and concern for others marked every interaction, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know him. When John, Heather and their late brother, Gerry, a member of the Class of '75, enrolled at Cushing, the family began a shared history with Cushing that has touched the Academy immeasurably, continuing that legacy with Rachel '07 and Matt '11. John's father served as a Trustee, and John honored the Academy by accepting Trusteeship in 2002. His wise and generous spirit and his thoughtful leadership greatly enriched the Board's work.
John was Chairman and CEO of Allied Printing Services in Manchester, Conn., a three-generation family business begun by his parents. As many of you are aware, through Allied Printing Services Charitable Foundation, John created the Gerald F. Sommers Memorial Golf Tournament in Gerry's memory, which for six years has benefited scholarships at Cushing, the Connecticut Children's Medical Center, and the Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation.
His family will receive friends, Tuesday from 1:00 - 3:00 pm and 5:00 - 8:00 pm and Wednesday from 5:00 - 7:00 pm at Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Road, South Windsor. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 7:00 pm at the funeral home. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Allied Printing Services Charitable Foundation in honor of John to be equally distributed to his many favorite charities.
Online expressions of sympathy may be left at the guestbook, which is posted at www.carmonfuneralhome.com or at www.caringbridge.org/visit/johnsommerssr
