Fall Family Weekend 2013

On Oct. 18, 2013, we welcomed more than 400 parents and guests to Cushing's campus to celebrate Fall Family Weekend. Families came from all over the United States and from as far away as Asia, Europe, South America, and Australia.

As it always does, Friday featured the opportunity for parents to meet with teachers, advisors, and college counselors. Parents also heard from Cushing's new Headmaster Chris Torino about his first few months at Cushing and his educational vision of a “growth mindset.”

On Friday night, families gathered in the Fisher-Watkins Dining Commons to enjoy good food and good company. Our students stepped up to the microphone and entertained everyone with their karaoke skills. A magician visited individual tables and amazed the guests. Popcorn, candy apples, and cotton candy were enjoyed by all. The evening ended with a wonderful display of talents by our perfoming arts students in the Joseph R. Curry Academic Center

On Saturday, our student athletes put their best feet forward. Boys soccer—varsity, JV, and JV 2—all won their games, as did the girls varsity volleyball team. Our football, JV girls volleyball, and varsity girls soccer teams didn't win, but had good showings. Our varsity field hockey team didn't win their game either, but they won in the character department, raising $1,200 for cancer research in their annual Stick It to Cancer fundraiser. The fundraiser is ongoing this week as well and the funds will go to the Dana Farber Cancer Center. The hospitality tent tables were laden with a wide variety of goodies, prepared by our parent volunteers, ensuring the spectators had plenty of sustenance to keep them cheering.

"The campus looked inviting and the event was smooth and well-run," said one parent. "It was great to have all of the sporting events on campus," said another.

We look forward to having everyone back on campus for Spring Family Weekend, April 25-27, 2014.
