Building with Bonsai

Picking the perfect bonsai isn’t easy, but if anyone can do it, it’s our very own Mr. Bob Johnson, Chair of Fine Arts. Earlier this week, Mr. Johnson and Ms. Ellen Harrington ’70 (Audio Visual Director and curator of the Cushing greenhouse) traveled down Route 119 to the Bonsai West nursery in Littleton, Mass., to begin selecting plants for Cushing’s soon-to-be-completed meditation garden.

To give you an idea of just how cool these plants are, the bonsai Mr. Johnson is holding is over 60 years old and came from a plant in China that was estimated to be over 500 years old.

Mr. Johnson was the illustrator and photographer for the book Beginning Bonsai: The Gentle Art of Miniature Tree Growing by Shirley and Larry Student, available on Amazon by clicking here.

The meditation garden will be located alongside the Fisher-Watkins Library Patio. Stay tuned for additional information on this wonderful addition to our campus and for photos of the big reveal!
