Beginning Again: Convocation 2014

On Sept. 7, 2014, Cushing Academy celebrated the start of a new school year when students, faculty, staff, and more than 60 guests gathered on Drew Common for Convocation. Through all of the speeches there was a strong sense of the role everyone plays in building and sustaining the Cushing community. English teacher Norm Carey read a poem that he had composed for the occasion. Fellow longtime faculty member Peggy Lee reminded those who had gathered about the history we share, and Student Body President Kat Lemieux ’15 talked about the importance of everybody working together to make this school year the best one yet.

Headmaster Torino asked the students to think about their purpose at the Academy and to realize that throughout their time at Cushing, that purpose may change. He reminded them that they will sometimes fall short of their goals, but that simply making the effort is a lesson in itself. Each time they try—even if they fail—they come closer to meeting their goal and mastering that skill. Cushing has built a constellation of adults that will support its students when they stumble and lift them up as they try again.

Following the ceremony, students and their advisors assembled in the Fisher-Watkins Dining Commons for the first of many formal dinners that will take place this year, while parents and other guests gathered on the library terrace for a reception and to get to know each other better.
