Dodgeball for Cushing

One of the best things about going to boarding school—even for day students—is the sense of community that’s to be found when the institution’s kids and adults come together.

That’s exactly what happened on Wednesday, April 15, when Cushing’s Student Development Advisory Board (SDAB) hosted what they hope will be the first instance of a new tradition—a kids vs. adults dodgeball tournament. The tournament was a fundraiser for a cause that the whole community believes in: the Cushing Academy Annual Fund. According to early calculations, SDAB raised more than $700 for the annual fund, which provides resources to the Academy’s classrooms, athletic teams, and faculty. The fund also provides financial aid and funds for hands-on learning experiences like field trips.

It was a five-game tournament with a team of faculty and staff taking on a team of students. The bleachers of Heslin Gymnasium were filled with students who came to cheer. The kids’ team won the tournament by a score of four games to one, but a good time was had by everyone in attendance—kids and adults alike. At the end, the crowd filed out of Heslin to the Queen’s “We Are the Champions” and the kids gathered on the turf for celebratory cookies.
