Susan Remmer Ryzewic ’69 Speaks to Cushing Students
On Monday, Apr. 20, Cushing students were visited by Susan Remmer Ryzewic ’69. After Cushing, she attended Wellesley and then earned her Ph.D. in the sociology of education from the University of Chicago. She is the President and CEO of EHR Investments, Inc., and the director of Cabot-Wellington, LLC. Her community commitments include serving as a Director of The Remmer Family Foundation, which focuses on at-risk girls.
Mrs. Ryzewic talked to the Cushing community about her far from perfect life prior to and during her time at Cushing, and how her experiences shaped her life and made her who she is. She had much wisdom to share and many lessons to teach, but her two significant themes were the significance of expectations and in her words “unearned gifts.”
Mrs. Ryzewic talked about how her parents’ expectations caused her to struggle with body image and confidence, ultimately leading to self-destructive behavior. She stated that looking back, she realized the significance of being proactive rather than reactive. Growing up she had always reacted to her parents expectations rather than proactively making the decisions that she thought was best for her.
Her other significant theme was those of unearned gifts: the blessings in life we receive that were beyond our control. She believes the second chance she received from the Headmaster at Cushing was an unearned gift that significantly impacted the path her life would take. She learned that it is easy to be supportive of those who are following our expectations, but those who truly need support are those that are struggling or who are in a bad place. She ended her presentation by stating, “So many things we have we did not necessarily earn or deserve to have,” and therefore, we should be humble, acknowledge that and be grateful for what we have.
