Throughout Summer Session, you spend one hour of the morning learning useful study, research, and technology skills in order to help you manage the increasing academic demands of high school. This course introduces you to the study techniques and software crucial to success in all disciplines, including:
- note taking
- time management
- reading strategies
- organized review for tests
- strategies for success on different types of tests
- Boolean searches
- evaluation of online sources
- research in our online library
You will also learn to use technology and software for academic purposes, including advanced features of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Prezi. In addition, this course will help you learn how to:
- schedule your time more efficiently
- determine your learning style and strengths
- store information in long-term memory
- develop habits that will serve you for the rest of your life, both in school and beyond.
Your teachers will reinforce these skills in the classroom so that theory quickly turns into practice. During the evening study hall, you will also employ these skills to prepare for your core courses. There is arguably no single set of skills as important to your academic success as those you will learn and apply in this course.
Supervised Study Hall
From 8:00 until 9:30 on Sunday through Thursday evenings, supervised study hall is a quiet period of concentrated practice and learning that helps you to improve your time management, reading and/or mathematical comprehension, written expression, note-taking, and test preparation. It is designed to provide you with an opportunity for individual study and homework preparation. Teachers assist you with homework as needed, monitor your progress, and help you focus on your goals so that you are able to achieve them successfully.
