Events & Excursions

New England offers the perfect backdrop for a summer of learning, friendship, and fun at Cushing Academy. The region offers a unique combination of natural beauty, historical sites, recreational activities, and cultural events.

Each week of the session, we offer a special all-school activity, some of which are on-campus. For others, we transport the entire student body and faculty off campus for a day or evening of fun.

Week I - Summer Olympics
Unwind from your studies during the Summer Olympics. The campus becomes a playground for a day with high-energy games, fun food, loud music, and plenty of opportunities to make new friends.

Weeks II & IV - Educational Class Trips
You may take educational class trips to any of the following destinations within Massachusetts:

Week III - International Evening
International Evening is a celebration of the rich cultural diversity at Cushing during the Summer Session. During the first week of classes, students and advisors begin rehearsing songs, skits, and dances representative of their cultures. Planning also gets underway for food preparation and groups begin creating posters, artwork, and table displays.
On the night of the event, Cushing's dining hall is transformed into an international bazaar with bright posters and flags, cultural artifacts, strains of exotic music, and the vibrant elegance of dozens of students in traditional dress. Everyone has the opportunity to explore the room, sample the foods, and learn something new. It's simply amazing to see so much of the world in one place! The evening concludes with performances on Cowell Chapel stage, featuring instrumental music, skits, songs, and dances that represent different cultures.
Week IV - Cabaret
Summer Session is a time to shine–not just in the classroom and studio–but also on stage. On this night, students and faculty have the opportunity to participate in the Cushing Cabaret, a super-fun variety show that features songs, dances, and all sorts of entertaining (and often hilarious!) acts. This not-to-be-missed event is the perfect way to celebrate the talented, adventurous, and spirited members of our school community, and each year it features some truly inspiring—and often surprising—performances!
Week V - Dinner/Dance on Boston Harbor
This is an evening for dining, dancing, and enjoying the company of friends aboard the Spirit of Boston, the premier cruise ship in Boston Harbor.
Week V - Graduation Dinner
The graduation dinner brings the entire Summer Session community together for a very special and festive evening. Gathered in the dining hall for this formal dinner, students are awarded certificates recognizing their academic accomplishments. Student speeches and the presentation of academic distinctions for each class round out this summer tradition. The evening culminates in “the last dance,” where students have the opportunity to spend time with each other and to exchange contact information with friends made during the summer at Cushing.
Weekend Excursions
Classes are just a part of your life at Cushing Academy during the Summer Session. On weekends, we offer a host of activities to appeal to every interest. For the adventurous, we organize whale watching and hiking excursions. For the more artistically inclined, we offer trips to museums such as the Museum of Fine Arts and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, and to concerts such as those put on by the Boston Symphony Orchestra. If you're interested in historic landmarks, or simply local color, you can go to Old Sturbridge Village, a completely restored colonial village in which the citizens are all “in character” in 17th-century attire. You can also go blueberry picking or visit the Adams Farm in Vermont.

For those students who simply want to relax, we go to amusement parks, beaches, and shopping malls. And of course no summer in Massachusetts is complete without a baseball game!

Students do not have to leave campus to have fun on the weekend. Concerts, outdoor movies on the football field, ice skating in our superb ice arena, dances, and the Student Center offer those students who want to stay on campus a wide array of activities and events.

Students interested in doing community service this summer should contact the Summer Session Office by May 1 so that we can arrange appropriate placement with local community and charitable organizations like Habitat for Humanity and the nearby homeless shelter.

The activities we mention here represent only a sampling of what is available to our students on the weekend. During the week, you can get involved in the intramural program and compete against fellow students in such sports as soccer, basketball, tennis, and volleyball. We firmly believe that a well-rounded summer school experience should allow time for play as well as for work. That's why, in addition to structured study time during the week, we provide an enriching social program on weekends.
