New England offers the perfect backdrop for a summer of learning, friendship, and fun at Cushing Academy. The region offers a unique combination of natural beauty, historical sites, recreational activities, and cultural events.
Each week of the session, we offer a special all-school activity, some of which are on-campus. For others, we transport the entire student body and faculty off campus for a day or evening of fun.
Week I - Dunn Park
Week II - Summer Olympics
For a fun-filled day of swimming, games, hiking, and great food, the whole school heads over to Dunn Park in nearby Gardner, MA. Watched closely by four certified life guards, students can swim in one of the most pristine lakes in the state. Organized games include frisbee, volleyball, badminton, and soccer. Faculty-guided hikes immerse students in the beautiful natural landscape of this well-kept park. Lastly, a food truck extravaganza provides a delicious and tempting cuisine for all tastes and appetites.
Unwind from your studies during the Summer Olympics. The campus becomes a playground for a day with high-energy games, fun food, loud music, and plenty of opportunities to make new friends.
Weeks II & IV - Educational Class Trips
You may take educational class trips to any of the following destinations within Massachusetts:
Week III - International Evening
International Evening is a celebration of the rich cultural diversity at Cushing during the Summer Session. During the first week of classes, students and advisors begin rehearsing songs, skits, and dances representative of their cultures. Planning also gets underway for food preparation and groups begin creating posters, artwork, and table displays.
On the night of the event, Cushing's dining hall is transformed into an international bazaar with bright posters and flags, cultural artifacts, strains of exotic music, and the vibrant elegance of dozens of students in traditional dress. Everyone has the opportunity to explore the room, sample the foods, and learn something new. It's simply amazing to see so much of the world in one place! The evening concludes with performances on Cowell Chapel stage, featuring instrumental music, skits, songs, and dances that represent different cultures.
Week IV - Cabaret
Week V - Dinner/Dance on Boston Harbor
Summer Session is a time to shine–not just in the classroom and studio–but also on stage. On this night, students and faculty have the opportunity to participate in the Cushing Cabaret, a super-fun variety show that features songs, dances, and all sorts of entertaining (and often hilarious!) acts. This not-to-be-missed event is the perfect way to celebrate the talented, adventurous, and spirited members of our school community, and each year it features some truly inspiring—and often surprising—performances!
This is an evening for dining, dancing, and enjoying the company of friends aboard the Spirit of Boston
, the premier cruise ship in Boston Harbor.
Week V - Graduation Dinner
The graduation dinner brings the entire Summer Session community together for a very special and festive evening. Gathered in the dining hall for this formal dinner, students are awarded certificates recognizing their academic accomplishments. Student speeches and the presentation of academic distinctions for each class round out this summer tradition. The evening culminates in “the last dance,” where students have the opportunity to spend time with each other and to exchange contact information with friends made during the summer at Cushing.
Classes are just a part of your life at Cushing Academy during the Summer Session. We firmly believe that a well-rounded summer school experience should allow time for play as well as for work, and we continue to maintain a healthy balance between the two.
On weekends, we offer a host of activities to appeal to every interest. For the adventurous, we organize whale watching and paint ball excursions, as well as trips to Six Flags and Sky Zone amusement parks. Of course, the summer would not be complete without shopping trips to Copley Square and Newbury St. in Boston, as well as to local malls and outlet stores. Catch the most popular movies at our local 12-cinema theater, go roller skating with friends at Roll on America, or enjoy the diverse and delicious local cuisine. In addition to these options, students can make trip or activity suggestions to our Director of Student Activities—or as he is better known on campus, “Mr. Fun!”.
