  • My Online Classes –Engaging, Challenging, and Flexible

Online classes for Summer Session 2020 provide a unique and carefully balanced synchronous and asynchronous learning experience.

The synchronous component includes real-time instructor and class engagement.  During each week of the online session, at times that best fit individual schedules, teachers will invite groups of students to join together for live class instruction, extra help sessions, group discussions, and general camaraderie. Teachers will also be available for one-to-one video conferencing for more individualized support. Each course is unique, and our instructors will carefully consider time-zone challenges and summer schedules when planning live classes and single-student meetings. All live sessions will be recorded and accessible to students for review at a later time.

The asynchronous component allows the flexibility of self-directed coursework at times that best fit a student’s summer schedule. To access coursework, students log in to their class page to listen to prerecorded instructor lectures, read an assigned web article, join a discussion board, submit an assignment or test, and review the homework for the week. Some classes also include virtual field trips and lab activities.

All Summer Session Online classes are instructor-paced, meaning students are required to complete coursework by assigned due dates.

Please note: While joining live class sessions is highly recommended for meaningful engagement in the online learning process, courses can be completed successfully with asynchronous attendance only.
  • The Cushing Academy Learning Process

Our online summer classes deliver the same rigorous and inspired curriculum as our on-campus academic year courses and uphold Cushing’s long tradition of providing students with a meaningful and memorable learning experience. In keeping with our school’s mission and core values, students are at the center of all we do and are fully supported in all aspects of a learning process that promotes participation, curiosity, and individual success. Cushing’s online teachers address each student's learning needs through individualized strategies, skills, accommodations, and instructional support. Throughout the entire online learning process, your teachers are readily available for questions, guidance, and support.
  • The Cushing Academy Learning Management System

Soon after registering for online classes, students will receive log-in information for the school’s learning management system, Schoology. This is where students will find individual class pages, multi-media course content and discussion boards, chapter assessments, and all grading information. Simply, the Schoology LMS is an all-in-one learning system designed to maximize student success in their online program. Students will also receive a Cushing email account upon enrollment. The majority of teacher and student communication throughout the online session is via the Schoology LMS or Cushing email.

Please contact your instructor if you encounter any technology or access issues with the Schoology LMS.

  • Textbooks and Classroom Materials

Required textbooks and other classroom materials vary by course and instructor. While most of these materials are readily available online for free, families are responsible for the purchase of any required books, fee-based online documents and subscriptions, and any lab supplies, if applicable. If a purchase is required, our faculty work hard to keep these costs to a minimum and will provide all enrolled students with a reading and resource list well in advance of the start of the online sessions.
  • Getting Ready for Online Learning

We understand that many students may be taking an online class for the first time. Rest assured, we are here to support and encourage you every step of the way! Soon after enrollment, students and families will receive an orientation package that includes video instructions for our learning management system, as well as strategies and tips to ensure academic success in an online learning environment. In addition, our staff is readily available to support you in all aspects of the process, both before and during the summer online sessions.

To further support students and parents in navigating the online learning environment, we welcome you to join us for a pre-session informational webinar on Thursday, June 18, 2020. A separate invitation with the event details will be sent to all enrolled students and parents.
  • Student Support

Students are fully supported in all aspects of the online learning process and have direct access to their teachers for real-time video conferencing, formative assessment feedback, and guidance in developing and reinforcing critical academic skills. Teachers monitor each student’s progress closely and provide timely and detailed comments throughout the six-week program. Each member of our online faculty is fully committed to the academic growth and success of each student in the program and will be readily available for questions, guidance, and support.
  • Partnering with Parents

At Cushing, we firmly believe that parents play a critical role in supporting the academic success of their students. Throughout the entire summer online experience, from registration to final report cards, we partner with parents to ensure a meaningful and memorable learning experience for their sons and daughters. This includes direct access to program administration and faculty, as well as the ability to view progress and grade reports. We welcome the opportunity to connect with parents regarding any aspect of the Summer Session online program.
