Playing soccer at Cushing Academy means being part of our rich athletic tradition. With talented student-athletes, committed coaches, and fantastic facilities, Cushing’s soccer program has earned recognition as one of the top prep school programs in New England.
Cushing fields four competitive teams. Teams play a full schedule of games and each team has at least two coaches. The goals at all levels are to improve our players through training with an emphasis on technical development, tactical awareness, and top physical fitness. Cushing has often culled its talent from both soccer-specific and multi-sport athletes, so all three phases of training are inherent to the success of the program.
The varsity team plays its home matches on Quimby Field, a turf field with fan stands, and lights for evening competitions. Cushing is a member of the Western New England Prep School Soccer Association and plays an incredibly competitive schedule with games against some of the strongest class A and B teams in New England.
Cushing has established a record of sending players to play at strong collegiate programs around the country and Cushing currently has several graduates playing at the D1 and D3 levels.
Casey Ftorek arrived at Cushing in the fall of 2019 after his graduation from Middlebury College and nine years teaching and coaching at Hebron Academy. Casey is originally from Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, where he still spends much of his summers with his family. Casey attended the Taft School for three years, where he was a two-sport varsity athlete. After a year in Stratford, Ontario playing junior hockey and volunteering in local elementary schools, he spent two years at Union College before transferring to Middlebury, playing hockey and soccer at both. As a member of the Dutchmen, Casey earned Liberty League Player of the Year honors, and with the Panthers, he was part of their 2007 NCAA National Championship winning soccer team and earned All-NESCAC and First Team All-American honors, while setting single season scoring records for both programs. He graduated with a B.A. in Economics and minoring in Education. While at Hebron, Casey taught in the History Department and was the assistant boys' varsity soccer coach and head boys' varsity hockey coach. Hebron's soccer team earned seven NEPSAC tournament births and won back-to-back New England Championships in 2016 and 2017. At Cushing, Casey is teaching in the History Department and joining the soccer program as the head coach for the boys' varsity team. He lives in Ashburnham House with his wife, Katie, and their daughter, Bayley.
