Academics

Cushing’s varied academic curriculum challenges and stimulates students with a range of abilities. With foundational courses, honors classes, Advanced Placement (AP) courses, and independent study, students can choose from a wide selection of traditional and innovative courses. We nurture intellectual curiosity in an abundance of ways!

Classes

Cushing’s academic day begins at 8:30 am.

  • All classes meet for 210 minutes per week.
  • Some classes meet four times per week for a mixture of 45-and 65-minute sessions.
  • Other classes (primarily AP classes, advanced Visual Arts classes, and Performing Arts classes) meet three times per week for 70 minutes.

Our approach gives faculty flexibility in crafting their teaching to be discipline-specific and appropriate to students’ levels. Thus, Cushing can create the most dynamic learning environment possible.

Advisors

Each Penguin is assigned a faculty advisor. This individual will help students during their time at Cushing by providing guidance and encouragement. Advisors regularly touch base with their students and often gather their advisory group for conversations, dinners, and special events.

Advisors develop close relationships with their advisees, and parents can reach out to them at any time.

Study Hall

Dorm life incorporates Study Hall—two hours from 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm Sunday through Thursday—to complete academic work. Having this established time in the week’s schedule creates a routine and environment conducive to studying, whether in students’ rooms or the Fisher-Watkins Library. This routine not only supports students in completing academic work while they’re at Cushing but develops effective study habits for life.
