The academic day begins at 8:30 am. Some classes meet four times per week, varying in length from 45 minutes to 65 minutes; other classes (primarily AP classes, advanced Visual Arts classes, and many Performing Arts classes) meet three times per week, for 70 minutes each (both models meeting for 210 minutes per week). The dual format allows teachers the flexibility to craft their approach in ways that are discipline- and level-specific; thus, creating the most dynamic learning environment possible. The schedule also allows for important communal meeting time for all-school assemblies, advisor meetings, and lunch.Click here

Extra Help sessions are built into the weekly schedule so that students may seek out teachers for extra instruction or questions. The weekly schedule also allows for meeting times for clubs and other organizations, all-school meetings, and assemblies. After classes, students typically attend their afternoon activities. These include competitive and recreational athletics, visual and performing arts, community service, or an academic independent study.
The Fisher-Watkins Dining Commons is open for breakfast from 7:15 - 8:00 am, for lunch from 11:30 am - 1:00 pm, and for dinner from 5:30 to 7:00 pm. On weekends, the dining hall often serves brunch and the schedule may sometimes change depending upon special events such as family weekends. Students are encouraged to suggest menu ideas to members of the dining hall staff and discuss ingredients and options for dietary needs.
In the Evening
From 8:00 to 10:00 pm, Cushing students are in study hall. Students may study in their rooms or in the Fisher-Watkins Library. This nightly routine provides appropriate structure for completing academic work, and helps develop effective and enduring study habits. From 10:00 to 10:30 pm, students have time to make phone calls and prepare for bed, with lights out at 10:30 pm (11:00 pm for seniors).
